Luckily you may have most of these items already in your wardrobe.

I can help you plan your entire hiking elopement outfit.

Here are my top three tips when considering what to wear for your adventure elopement hike.

  1. Hiking Base Layer

A base layer is described as any clothing that touches your skin. For instance: sports bra, underwear, leggings, shirt, and socks.

Your base layers should be made of quick-dry fabrics that pull moisture away from your body.

Best Fabric Composition for Base Layers:

When selecting a base layer chose moisture-wicking fabrics such as nylon and polyester.

Wool is not as moisture-wicking, however, it will keep you warm even if your clothes are wet. I always suggest wearing wool socks during a hiking elopement.

Avoid wearing cotton as a base layer. Cotton fabrics take longer to dry and do not wick moisture away from the body.

Check the tags on your clothing and check the fabric composition to ensure there is no cotton.

2. Insulation and Warmth

What is an Insulating Layer?

The purpose of an insulating layer is to provide warmth.

You may be hot while you are hiking but you will be glad you packed it when you arrive at the summit. The temperature can change dramatically with elevation gain.

Always bring an insulating layer in your backpack on every hike. It is an essential hiking layer to have in case of an emergency.

Choosing an Insulating Layer:

There are countless types of insulated jackets that you can bring to your hiking elopement.

For warmer weather, a light fleece, thin down jacket, or wool sweater can suffice. In the winter I would recommend a 300-650 fill down jacket.

Pro tip: Goose down will be less warm if it gets wet - synthetic down will stay warm even if it gets soaked in the rain. Goose down will be lighter to carry whereas synthetic down jackets have more bulk and weight.

Extra Items to Keep You Warm:

  • gloves

  • beanie, fleece headband, earmuffs

  • hand warmers by hot hands

  • extra pair of wool socks

  • fleece leggings

  • scarf, shall, blanket

3. Weather Protection

Always Bring a Rain Jacket:

In the Pacific Northwest, the weather can change in a matter of minutes.

The final essential hiking layer is a protective outer shell (aka a rain jacket).

Even if the forecast calls for clear sunny skies you must pack a lightweight rain jacket.

Weather can change in a heartbeat, and if for any reason you get stuck on the mountain, you need a protective outer shell.

Elopement Footwear

If you are hiking during your elopement you must have adequate footwear. Here is a blog post I wrote specifically about how to choose the best elopement shoes.

If you are buying new hiking boots make sure they are waterproof. Pro tip: always wear wool socks. Even if your wool socks are soaked your feet can still stay warm.
