Planning a Destination Wedding with Kids

1. Location Research with Kids

When considering a destination location think about how assessable it will be for your children. Can they go on a hike with you or would it be easier if you could be on a paved path with a stroller?

Be realistic about what your children will be able to participate in. If you need help creating a realistic elopement timeline feel free to contact me at any time.

2. Have Someone There to Help

I always suggest that you have a family member or friend come to help with your kids. For safety, for your sanity, for support. It will make eloping with kids so much easier if you have someone there to help.

3. Destination Wedding With a Baby

If you have children under the age of two it’s always nice to have a baby carrier. If you are hiking during your elopement I think barrier carriers are a necessity.

I also strongly suggest you have a family member or friend present to help with your young child. Having an adult at your wedding that you trust will truly allow you to relax, to get lost in the moment, and realize that you and the person you love are starting your forever together.

4. Have a Backup Plan

Always have a plan B. Then also make a plan C. When you are eloping with children it’s essential to have more than one back up plan.

A second ceremony location, extra food, clothes, and be prepared to take breaks. If you aren’t stuck in a rigid mindset about your timeline things will be fine.

5. Take Time Together

I always suggest that you and your partner take some time just the two of you. For instance, your ceremony could be at the trailhead with your kids, then we can hike to a separate location to get some epic photos.

Two-day elopements also work great with children. You can spend the first day together then the second day just the two of you. Don’t worry, I can be there to photograph all of it.

Cute Ideas for Eloping with Kids

1. Get Ready Together

I would love to snap a photo of your daughter zipping up your dress, the straightening of your son’s tie, the two of you giggling together.

Those moments are so precious and can be some of the most memorable minutes of your day.

2. First Look

Do a “first look” with your kids. If you are getting ready separately it can be so much fun to capture the look on their face when they first see you.

3. Wedding Participant

Add a touch of tradition and have a flower girl or ring bearer.

Even if there isn’t an aisle giving them a small task such as this can make them feel like they took part in the festivities.

4. Ceremony Ideas

Let your kids be part of the ceremony. Have them read a poem, sing one of their favorite songs, or take part in a ceremony ritual together.

You can even give them time during the ceremony just to talk, express their feelings, and say whatever is on their mind.

5. Mini Photographers

Give them a camera. Children are curious and they see things with fresh eyes. I love bringing my Instax Polaroid camera for children to take pictures of their parents during their elopements.

Of course, there will be some blurry images of their chubby little fingers. However, the few that do turn out are so insanely special, because your child took it.
