Eloping in Washington State

Are you considering eloping in Washington state?

Hi, I’m Alex! I plan and photograph elopements in the PNW.

I created a list of the three Washington state marriage laws you need to know about.

If at any point you have a specific question don’t hesitate to reach out!

  1. Marriage License

The state of Washington requires you to apply for a marriage license at least 3 days before your elopement date. That license will be valid for up to 60 days after your application date.

Pro tips for non-local elopers: if you don’t live in Washington, you can apply for the marriage license online and have it mailed to you.

2. Officiant

Washington state requires that you have a legal officiant to perform your ceremony.

It is very easy to become an officiant online via the Universal Life Church. This can be a fun way to involve a family member or friend in your elopement - by having them marry you!

Remember you can structure your wedding ceremony any way you want. Here is a blog post outlining some tips on how to make your elopement ceremony special.

3. Witnesses

The last legal requirement for the state of Washington is to have two witnesses present at your wedding. They will also sign your marriage certificate.

Pro tip: your photographer can sign as one of your official witnesses. Read through my post on how to find the right elopement photographer for you.
